BRINGING TO LIGHT

Bringing it back to light, and to the credit it deserves, has been Giuseppe's mission since it was inherited.

The noble Alessandro Della Torre , bishop of Scitia, purchased the villa in 1613, due to the renunciation of the inheritance, and consequent extinction of the Nichesola lineage, by Alessandro Fratta , nephew of Cesare Nichesola.

in 1641 it was purchased by the Venetian nobleman Sebastiano Michiel

In 1683 it was inherited by the Mocenigo brothers, including Alvise III, Doge of Venice from 1722 to 1733.

In 1798, following the fall of the Venetian Republic, the villa was sold to the Veronese landowner Lorenzo Butturini .

Description of the restorations

The villa was built between 1580 and 1590 by Fabio Nichesola (1533-1601), a Veronese jurist from whom the villa takes its name.

Fabio's son, Cesare Nichesola (1556-1612), was a canon of Verona Cathedral and a collector of antiquities. He was responsible for the creation of the botanical garden and a collection of epigraphs and antiquities, which turned the complex into a villa-museum.

The botanical garden , arranged on the two terraces of the garden, contained around 140 rare plants, including some from the island of Crete and Egypt, which Cesare Nichesola had collected thanks also to the collaboration of the naturalists of the Botanical Garden of the University of Padua (the largest and oldest botanical garden in Europe).

Cesare Nichesola's collection of antiquities included more than sixty Latin and two Greek epigraphs. Upon Nichesola's death in 1612, the epigraphs were transferred to the courtyard of the Accademia Filarmonica in Verona, and in the eighteenth century they formed the original core of today's Museo Lapidario Maffeiano in Verona.
